THE PHOENIX
A sweeping two-part musical told through Chinese classical dance, The Phoenix explores identity, ambition, and rebirth across continents and generations.
In 1980s China, twin sisters Li Feng Yi and Li Rui Huang are discovered by a national dance academy and rise to stardom—until a tragic accident shatters their future. Inspired by the real-life story of dancer Liu Yan, Part One asks: Who are you without the thing that defines you?
Decades later, Rui Huang—now Ruby—lives in Los Angeles, having left behind her name, her sister, and her art. As the 2028 LA Olympics approach, old wounds resurface, forcing her to confront the past and question if it’s too late to reclaim it. Part Two asks: When is it too late to redefine your life’s purpose?
Blending contemporary musical theatre with the elegance of Chinese dance, The Phoenix is a story of love, loss, and finding the courage to rise again.
